Ohio Sales Tax Holiday: What You Need to Know Before August 1

Starting August 1, 2025, the Ohio Sales Tax Holiday 2025 will offer one of the most expansive sales tax holidays in the country, and it runs for two full weeks.

From 12:00 a.m. on August 1 through 11:59 p.m. on August 14, nearly all tangible personal property priced at $500 or less will be exempt from state and local sales tax.

What’s Included?

This tax holiday covers a wide range of purchases, great for both business and personal use. As long as each item is priced at $500 or less, it’s tax-exempt. Some eligible items include:

  • Laptops, tablets, and small electronics
  • Office supplies and tech accessories
  • Work clothing and uniforms
  • Small office furniture and tools
  • School supplies and backpacks
  • Inventory or promotional items under $500/unit

Whether you’re outfitting your team, restocking your office, or planning a back-to-school promotion, this is a smart time to buy.

What’s Not Included?

Some items are specifically excluded from the tax break:

  • Motor vehicles and watercraft
  • Outboard motors
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Tobacco and vapor products
  • Products containing marijuana

Why It Matters for Businesses

Whether you’re in retail, ecommerce, or distribution, this holiday presents an opportunity to drive sales, plan promotions, and ensure compliance. For example:

  • Point-of-sale systems may need to be updated to reflect temporary exemptions.
  • Marketing teams should plan promotions now to take advantage of tax-free purchasing power.
  • Finance and tax departments should review eligible SKUs to avoid incorrect taxation or missed exemptions.
